Waymo Via Partners with C.H. Robinson for Autonomous Middle-Mile Freight
Waymo Via and C.H. Robinson Partnership
Waymo Via, the commercial trucking division of Alphabet's Waymo, has announced a strategic partnership with C.H. Robinson, one of North America's largest third-party logistics providers. The partnership will integrate Waymo's autonomous Class 8 trucks into C.H. Robinson's managed freight network, initially on routes in Texas and the Southwest.
Integration Approach
Under the partnership, C.H. Robinson will offer Waymo Via's autonomous trucking capacity as an option within its Navisphere platform, the company's proprietary transportation management system used by over 100,000 shippers. When an autonomous truck is available for a compatible lane, the system will automatically match the load and handle all dispatch, tracking, and documentation.
Route Network
Initial operations will focus on three primary lanes: Dallas to Houston (240 miles), Dallas to El Paso (630 miles), and Houston to San Antonio (200 miles). Waymo Via will operate a fleet of 40 autonomous trucks equipped with the 5th-generation Waymo Driver hardware suite, which includes 29 cameras, 5 lidar sensors, and 6 radar units.
Industry Implications
The partnership represents a significant step toward integrating autonomous trucks into mainstream freight operations. C.H. Robinson's vast shipper network provides Waymo Via with access to a diverse range of freight that would be difficult to source independently. For shippers, the partnership promises improved consistency, as autonomous trucks are not subject to hours-of-service limitations.
