DTNA Invests $500M in New Class 8 Assembly Plant in Mississippi

DTNA Mississippi Plant Investment

Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) has announced a $500 million investment in a new Class 8 truck assembly plant in Tupelo, Mississippi. The facility, expected to create over 2,000 jobs, will supplement existing production at the company's Cleveland, North Carolina and Portland, Oregon plants, adding approximately 40,000 units of annual Class 8 production capacity.

Strategic Rationale

The investment comes as DTNA faces sustained strong demand for its Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star products. Order backlogs have remained elevated for over 18 months, and the company has been unable to fully meet demand with its existing manufacturing footprint. The Mississippi location was chosen for its proximity to major suppliers, competitive labor costs, and access to the I-22 and I-78 transportation corridors.

Facility Details

The 1.2-million-square-foot plant will feature a modern flexible manufacturing system capable of producing both the Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star 57X on the same line. The facility will incorporate Industry 4.0 technologies including collaborative robots for cab assembly, automated guided vehicles for parts delivery, and a digital twin of the entire production process for optimization.

Timeline and Impact

Construction is scheduled to begin in Q3 2026, with the first trucks expected to roll off the line in Q1 2028. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves praised the investment, noting that the state offered a competitive incentive package including infrastructure improvements and workforce training programs through local community colleges.
