Aurora Innovation Begins Commercial Autonomous Trucking Operations in Texas
Aurora Autonomous Trucking Launch
Aurora Innovation has officially launched commercial autonomous trucking operations on the I-45 corridor between Dallas and Houston, Texas. The service, operated under the Aurora Horizon brand, represents the first fully driverless (SAE Level 4) commercial freight operation by a major autonomous vehicle company. Initial operations use a fleet of 20 Peterbilt 579-based autonomous trucks.
Technology Stack
Aurora's autonomous trucks are equipped with the company's proprietary Aurora Driver system, which integrates multiple sensor modalities including long-range lidar (up to 400 meters), radar, and cameras. The system uses a proprietary simulation-based safety case methodology called the Safety Case Framework, which Aurora says demonstrates the system's safety performance exceeds that of a human driver by a factor of 3.5x.
Operational Model
The Aurora Horizon service operates as a hub-to-hub model, where autonomous trucks handle the highway portion of a route between transfer hubs located near major freight terminals. At each hub, the trailer is transferred to a conventional truck driven by a human driver for the first-mile and last-mile portions. This model allows Aurora to focus autonomous operations on the relatively predictable highway environment.
Expansion Plans
Aurora plans to expand operations to the I-10 corridor between Houston and San Antonio by Q3 2026, followed by the I-35 corridor between Dallas and San Antonio. The company has regulatory approval to operate in Texas and is seeking permits in New Mexico and Arizona.
