ChargePoint Deploys First Megawatt Charging System for 电动卡车

ChargePoint MCS Deployment

ChargePoint has deployed the first commercially available Megawatt Charging System (MCS) at a TA/Petro travel center in Barstow, California, situated along the busy I-15 freight corridor between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The installation represents a critical milestone in the development of charging infrastructure needed to support long-haul 电动卡车 operations.

Technical Specifications

The MCS installation includes four charging stalls, each capable of delivering up to 1.2 MW (1,200 kW) of DC power at up to 1,250 volts and 960 amps. The system uses the newly standardized MCS connector, which is significantly larger than the CCS connectors used for passenger 电动车 and features an automated connection system to manage the heavy charging cable.

Charging Performance

In initial testing with a prototype MCS-compatible Freightliner eCascadia, the system demonstrated a 20% to 80% charge time of approximately 25 minutes for a 600 kWh battery pack, delivering approximately 300 miles of range during a standard 30-minute driver break. This charging speed approaches the refueling convenience of diesel.

Expansion Plans

ChargePoint plans to deploy MCS installations at 25 additional truck stops along major freight corridors by the end of 2027, focusing on the I-5 (West Coast), I-10 (Southern corridor), I-95 (East Coast), and I-80 (Northern corridor) routes.
