SPN 3936 / FMI 2 — Aftertreatment SCR Catalyst Conversion Efficiency
Severity: High (potential derate)
Symptoms: Check engine light, reduced power, DEF warning
Common Causes:
- DEF quality issue (contaminated or diluted)
- DEF injector malfunction
- SCR catalyst degraded
- NOx sensor reading errors
Diagnosis Steps:
- Test DEF quality with refractometer (should be 32.5% urea)
- Check DEF injector spray pattern
- Monitor NOx sensor readings (pre and post SCR)
- Check for exhaust leaks before SCR
SPN 5246 / FMI 0 — Aftertreatment DPF Soot Load Too High
Severity: High (potential engine shutdown)
Symptoms: DPF lamp on, reduced power, regen required
Common Causes:
- Failed passive regeneration (too much city driving)
- Faulty exhaust temperature sensors
- Turbo issue reducing exhaust temperature
- EGR valve stuck (excess soot production)
Diagnosis Steps:
- Read DPF soot percentage with scan tool
- If >85%, attempt forced regeneration
- If regen fails, check exhaust temp sensors
- Verify turbo boost pressure within spec
SPN 3226 / FMI 3 — Aftertreatment DPF Pressure Sensor Circuit High
Severity: Medium
Common Causes:
- Damaged pressure sensor wiring
- Frozen/clogged pressure lines (winter)
- Failed differential pressure sensor
Fix: Inspect wiring, blow out pressure lines, replace sensor if needed.
SPN 641 / FMI 14 — VGT Actuator
Severity: High (turbo performance)
Common Causes:
- VGT actuator stuck or slow
- Soot buildup in VGT vanes
- Electrical issue with actuator motor
Fix: Clean VGT vanes, test actuator with scan tool override, replace if mechanical failure.
