Western Star Introduces 57X All-New Vocational Truck Platform

Western Star 57X Launch

Western Star, the vocational truck brand under Daimler Truck North America, has officially launched the 57X, an all-new platform designed exclusively for severe-duty vocational applications. The 57X replaces the aging 4900 series and represents the first clean-sheet Western Star design in over 20 years.

Built for Severe Duty

The 57X features a new proprietary cab design with a 2.1-meter interior width, the widest in its class. The cab is built with a combination of steel and aluminum panels, with full hot-dip galvanized steel used in all structural areas. The truck offers set-forward and set-back axle configurations, with front axle ratings up to 22,000 lbs and rear tandem ratings up to 58,000 lbs for the heaviest applications.

Powertrain

The 57X is available with the Detroit DD13 and DD16 engines, with the DD16 offering up to 600 HP and 2,050 lb-ft of torque for the most demanding applications. The Allison 4700 OFS automatic transmission is available for off-highway use, alongside the Detroit DT12-VX automated manual transmission with vocational-specific calibrations including a creeper gear.

Target Markets

Western Star is targeting the 57X at concrete mixer, dump truck, heavy haul, logging, and oil field service markets. The truck has already been selected by several major ready-mix concrete companies for fleet standardization, and the first production units are now rolling off the line at the Cleveland, North Carolina assembly plant.
