Cummins Completes Acquisition of Meritor, Creating Integrated Drivetrain Powerhouse
Cummins-Meritor Integration Complete
Cummins Inc. has completed the full integration of Meritor, the commercial vehicle axle and drivetrain manufacturer it acquired for $3.7 billion. The combined entity is positioned to offer complete powertrain solutions from engine to axle for both diesel and electric commercial vehicles.
Integrated Product Portfolio
The integration creates a unique competitive advantage. Cummins can now offer a fully integrated powertrain package including engine (or electric motor), transmission, driveline, and axle, optimized as a system for maximum efficiency. For the diesel product line, the X15, X12, and B6.7 engines can be matched with Meritor's 14X and RT axle families with coordinated calibrations that improve fuel economy by up to 3%.
Electrification Synergies
The most significant strategic benefit is in electrification. Meritor's eAxle technology, which integrates the electric motor, inverter, and axle into a single unit, is now combined with Cummins' battery pack and power electronics capabilities. The integrated Cummins Accelera eAxle is already being offered to major OEMs for battery-electric truck applications.
Financial Impact
Cummins reports that the Meritor integration has generated approximately $300 million in annualized synergies, exceeding the original target of $250 million. Cummins now expects the Drivetrain segment to generate revenues of approximately $5 billion annually.
